Treatment of ice-shelf evolution combining flow and flexure

چکیده

Abstract We develop a two-dimensional, plan-view formulation of ice-shelf flow and viscoelastic flexure. This combines, for the first time, shallow-shelf approximation horizontal (and shallow-stream on lubricated beds such as where ice rises rumples form), with treatment thin-plate demonstrate by performing two finite-element simulations: one relict pedestalled lake features that exist some debris-covered shelves due to strong heterogeneity in surface ablation, other rumpling grounding zone an rise. The proposed opens new venues investigate physical processes require coupling between longitudinal deformation vertical flexure, instance, effects melting supraglacial lakes shelves, interactions sea swell, many others.

Ice-shelf tidal flexure and subglacial pressure variations

We develop a model of an ice shelf-ice stream system as a viscoelastic beam partially supported by an elastic foundation. When bedrock near the grounding line acts as a fulcrum, leverage from the ice shelf dropping at low tide can cause significant ð 1 cmÞ uplift in the first few kilometers of grounded ice. This uplift and the corresponding depression at high tide lead to basal pressure variati...

Ice Shelf Water plume flow beneath FilchnerRonne Ice Shelf, Antarctica

[1] A two-dimensional plume model is used to study the interaction between FilchnerRonne Ice Shelf, Antarctica and its underlying ocean cavity. Ice Shelf Water (ISW) plumes are initiated by the freshwater released from a melting ice shelf and, if they rise, may become supercooled and deposit marine ice due to the pressure increase in the in situ freezing temperature. The aim of this modeling st...

Mapping ice-shelf flow with interferometric synthetic aperture radar stacking

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) observations of ice-shelf flow contain ocean-tide and atmospheric-pressure signals. A model-based correction can be applied, but this method is limited by its dependency upon model accuracy, which in remote regions can be uncertain. Here we describe a method to determine two-dimensional ice-shelf flow vectors independently of model predictions of...

Assessment of the importance of ice-shelf buttressing to ice-sheet flow

[1] Reduction or loss of a restraining ice shelf will cause speed-up of flow from contiguous ice streams, contributing to sea-level rise, with greater changes from ice streams that are wider, have stickier beds, or have higher driving stress. Loss of buttressing offsetting half of the tendency for icestream/ice-shelf spreading for an ice stream similar to Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica is...
